Took my Brother for his first ever kayak fishing trip. He and I have been tubing Dana and Doheny for a while, but I got into kayaks so I took him. I have three sea kayaks and one of the funnest things for me has been taking friends out, and now my bro'.

We launched in the harbor and paddled over to doheny. He tossed grubs while I made bait, live smelt. He caught a couple little sand bass.

I then rigged up the live smelt on a Carolina rig, and started getting bit pretty quick. My brother set up a pole for the live smelt, and would paddle over, get one from my bait-tank, then go catch a fish, then come back!

Action was pretty steady for us, slow for the other three kayaks and four float tubers. I gotta quit posting about this spot, it was pretty busy there. Sadly, my brother had to be home in Brea by 1:30, so we quit fishing after just a couple of hours, so I will most likely hear from Yanni about all the fish caught after we left!

I caught two legal halibut, was broken off on 15 pound p-line by a big something that fouled my bait pole, bummer! My bro' caught a legal WSB plus a 24 and a 26 incher. We both caught smaller fish.

All fish released, MUCH to the displeasure of Steve in the red kayak!
He watched me release a good one from a distance, then when I hooked up another right nearby he said "you aren't gonna let it go are you?"
I told him it was short, and turned her loose. He knew I was lying, (I guess I don't lie very convincingly,) and said "ah man you're bull-sh*tting me"

Both halibut were lip-hooked on the owner circle hooks I use now, and I never would have netted the first one but I thought I might keep her until I saw how lightly hooked she was, the second I never lifted from the water.

My bro' turned the legal WSB loose as well, good for him! It may suprise some on this exchange but I hear pretty frequently from people who can't believe I let so many legal fish go. But when I already have a freezer full of Halibut, I can't see killing more.

But of course they always say "but my family loves them, we'll eat it all." I don't know, I felt kinda mean letting them all go today, but I figure if I catch 'em I can do what I want with them...
