Gulping water isn't a factor in either case. I went in over my head in extra-baggy (extra comfy!) dry breathables with no straps (dumb, but didn't matter) and took on maybe a pint of water? Not enought to get me all the way wet inside, or even soak my socks completely.

Just climbed back into the yak after getting back to it and flipping it over. It's probably smarter to keep 'em cinched, but i had just taken a pee-break and forgot about it.

Which is one of the reasons dry-breathables are better, they are super lightweight, like a wind-breaker, and you feel like you are wearing nothing extra at all.

Since they are wind and water-proof they are the perfect outer layer, and you can layer under as needed, and remove as needed.

The neoprene ones are nearly as miserable as a wetsuit, although at least they provide a good wind-barrier. You are constricted and get damp from sweat, and they are awkward to remove if it warms up.

Breathables go off in seconds, in fact if somehow you had to swim a long way, and didn't need the floatation, you can shrug right out of breathables in a second. But I wouldn't consider that a big factor, just nice to know.
