Jason,

In the ocean I really worry about the possibility that I might have to swim for my kayak or recover from dumping in the surf. The currents in the ocean could make recovery difficult. Since I have open ocean swimming experience. I still see waders slowing me down. Also you have to consider that we fish in the Malibu area, which does not have the same protection as Doheny does with a harbor right next to it.

Compare drift fishing Deep hole, with halibut hunting at Doheny and we are not comparing apples to apples.

This is why for lake fishing I am leaning toward waders. Most of the lakes I fish are not large and the currents are not an issue. If the wind gets tough you will be blown into the shore unlike the dangers of sudden offshores when ocean fishing.

Quietman definately has a ton of experience with waders from float tubing that gives him some inside knowledge I am not familiar with. Since some lakes are non contact waders might be solution.

If the wader thing seems to be sketchy in the lakes I can always put them in my RV for my Kings river camping trips.

I am not sure what's up with the east coast thing, but it's probably discussed at length over at kayakfishingstuff.com
