general trolling questions. need some help

I've been reading that trolling is a very effective way of fishing. Since I'm new to kayaking I have a couple of questions before I hit the water. I will be using live bait and squid. I do not have any lures at the moment but will get some soon. How would I troll these baits. When trolling do I keep the bait on the surface or use weight and fish the bottom. I have 2 more days to get all the info I need before going out. I appreciate any info you can give me. thanks
