I'm fairly certain I haven't seen this fish before. This fish was caught by a client of mine today. I'm usually pretty good with local species as are most anglers whom fish regularly but this is something I couldn't identify. It's possible that this fish is more common than I realize. Any suggestions. I've caught Giant Kelp Fish before which seem to resemble this fish more than others but the markings were totally different. Another fish it may resemble after checking the DFG Marine Region is a Pacific Hake. Any ideas, guesses, speculations?

Btw, Joe nailed a nice calico in about 10 ft of water with one of his sand crab flies. That was quite impressive for me to witness since I hadn't seen someone nail a calico on the fly before. Especially during a slacked tide and a fairly dead bass bite.
