: HI Guys. I am in the wantabe stage right now and I sure could use some advice. I know--I need to try stuff out, and I will, but those of you who have been doing this for years could save me a lot of time if you'll help me out a little. Our winter weather up here is in the 50's with light to heavy rain a lot of the time. I plan on fishing the lakes, slower parts of the rivers, and estuaries in Nor/Cal--Southeren Oregon. I may get into the Ocean at some point later on. What are some good bets on fishing kayaks for this type of usage? Would you recommend an open yak wearing a wetsuit, or a more enclosed one? I'm 6'1, 210 lbs., and have been a competetive cyclist for years. Are the ones with the pedal systems really any good? And finally--what are you using and why? Thanks

I live in Northern cal and fish from alturas to trinidad along highway 299 and bought an aegean kayak; a bit big for some but it has a dry ride and is a nice platform for freshwater fishing provided you add a crate or two. The center seat for a solo paddler is raised and I only get wet from the paddle runoff, so paddle pants are a plus.I bought mysterioso underlayments and use the in 90 degree weather and they are great with no heat load, but if you will get into the coast fishing then you might want to add a 4/3 wetsuit on top of that; the thicker suits (5mil)might be to much in hotter weather, but ask the rental shops for their opinions. It is your time to bug the heck out of rental shops and dealers for information on what works and what doesn't. Going to Trinidad bay this weekend and the last time I was there the rental kayaks where out in force. It's time for some lings for me. TL
