We took the Cabo, SPTW and the Scrambler with us camping at the beach this weekend. Our campsite was by tower #7 at the mouth of the San Elijo Lagoon.

Early Saturday morning I paddled out with the SPTW and fished the kelp for a steady pick on the sand bass. The most productive color plastic was the black orange and gold flake.

I saw only one other kayak fisherman the whole weekend. Steve was stalking an 80-pound T shark that was chasing bait when I paddled up. He is a local who fishes this water year round. He told me that the bass bite is pretty consistent punctuated with an occasional WSB, YT and wide open Calico bite, like the day when he caught (15) calicos all over 5 ponds each from the kelp in front of Swamie’s.

This was the maiden voyage for Steve’s new eXtreme and my first look at one. It sure looks like a winner to me and back on the beach Steve let me take her out onto the reef for a test paddle. The eXtreme gives a whole new meaning to the term punching through the surf. Coming back in was a breeze, she stayed out in front of the breaking waves and surfed straight with out any of the stern swing that I’ve become accustom to in my SPTW.

My wife, children and friends spent the rest of the weekend doing nature tours back into the lagoon with the kids & the Cabo triple and surfing with the scrambler.

John
