New Kayaker

Hi all -
I just purhased a kayak and was wondering if it needs licensing / registration like larger boats. Plus, I'm planning on heading out on 4/5- 4/6 weekend, any suggestions for a newbie learning the ropes. Lots of years of floattubing experience, primarily in freshwater, but some salt. Thank you.
