I saw a Garmin the other day that came with a dry bag?

For a kayak, you don't need overkill. You just need to get to a waypoint and follow a breadcrumb trail. I have a magellan that floats and no dry bag needed.

I thought that I'd use my GPS all the time, but I rarely use it except on the kayak. On the kayak it mostly sits in my tackle bag for the following reasons:

I am a third Generation native of Los Angeles. I am not geographically challenged in Southern California. I can get to almost any place without a map and minor directions are simple. I've been in the ocean of Southern California Sailing and boating, not to mention my kayak. I have also been to many of the beaches, this also includes Catalina and the Channel Islands.

If you are familiar with the areas you are going to fish and the beaches you launch from. Your GPS will probably sit below deck most of the time.

Since it is only a tool to help locate underwater structure or find my way back in fog, a basic model works just fine.

P.S. About the only redeeming feature of a GSP for use in my car is the ETA function and the speedometer since my RV speedometer is broken.
