I've used nothing but Garmin for years, including in my airplane.

I would be confident that it is a quality product.

However, 12 hour battery life is verrry short, especially considering that they typically get less than claimed.

Also the cheapest garmin etrex version retail for $79 and are very similar, so unless the street price for this one is considerably less, I don't see the point.

It is slightly smaller and lighter, things a backpacker might care about, but then again you would need to carry plenty of extra batterys in dry-storage.

I would reccommend the Garmin GPS II or GPS III and III+ for kayaking and for dash-use in a car.
I would get one off ebay, if money was any issue, new they are about $250.

They are a bit awkward to carry in a pocket, but do everything else better, are water-resistant, and can be remote powered on 12 volts without an adapter.

See the picture above for the mount in my FnD, it comes out and goes on my dash and is great for the drive to go 'yakking as well.

Just my .02...
