My sister enrolled my nephew in a swim class at the Murray Callum (I think) swim school. One of their specialties is getting children to swim. Six months ago (he had just barely turned three) he was able to do a crawl stroke. Granted, this won't totally save your child out there in the big ocean, it won't save your for sure either, but at least your child will stay calm and be able to stay afloat till you can help him. I also took him to the bay on several occasions so he is used to being afloat. The first time we went out, I had him jump in off the kayak and get back on, so we knew it was possible, and that if need be I could even lift him up if I had to. At this point, he has very little fear of things, he thinks waves and punching through the surf is cool and stays put between my legs very well on the re-entry. Get em' out there as soon as possible.
