: Trying to get the next generation going. Took my 3yr old nephew out to La Jolla today, with the pretense of whale watching. Took a fising pole with just in case those pesky fish started to bother us, never got a chance to use it. He's been out with me a few times before, and upon Eagle Eyes surf report yesterday, and with all the whale reports, I figured it was as good a time to get him out there. Got to the beach around 3 and ran into Fishin' Magician right as I was about to launch, good to see him. Put my little nephew on the bow (he is a good little swimmer and was wearing a life vest, behaves perfectly in the kayak and just loves it never wants to go home) and soon we were off. About 1/4 mile of the beach close to the swim bouys, ran into some dolphins and was a great start to the day, we chased them around a bit and my nephew was excited. We kept paddling out, my plan being to be out in front of the hotel somewhere. When we got out by the hotel I tied off to some kelp and started to chum some bread to show my little nephew the smelt, sure enough very soon we had an aquarium going. He though the kelp was really neat, the long stringers, even showed him a big bull kelp ball. Just as I was running out of bread and almost ready to pack it in a pair of whales came by not more than 100 feet in front of the yak, spouting (water smoke) as he would call it. They were creating quite a ruckus in front of us and my nephew just thought this was the bomb. We stayed in position watching them till they left. I untied from the kelp and started to paddle in and soon enough there were two more, we watched them for a bit, and I started to secure the gear. I then put a light stick on him in case of any problems on the way in. We then paddled homeward and made the (little) surf break at sundown. I put him between my legs and we rode in, he is quite the little expert and hinders my operation very little under most conditions. Can't wait to have him out there in the summer. Take a kid fishing!! You'll both be happy you did!!Al

I could only imagine what was going through your nephew's mind when he saw the whle. That's as close to euphoria I think a 3 year old can get. If he gets into the marine sciences, you'll know why. Can't wait to take my kids out. Though it will be some time since they can't swim yet.
