We caught a total of eight dorado in four days from our kayak on the North end of the island. The calamari are holding close to the island and are easy to catch for bait, if you can lift them into to your kayak. We caught twenty to thirty pound calamari (squid). To catch calamari use a large squid jig with a handle on top to lift the squid you can pick-up a squid jig in town, the ones we have here in Los Angeles are too small. We used number 2/0 hooks and buried the hook shank in the squid for best results and let the dorado run with the bait for a good 100 meters before putting the rod in gear. To find the fish we paddled Noth of the island towards El Carmen for about a mile and then started looking for kelp patties. If we didn't find a patty we just started chumming some cut squid and let our hooks keep up with the chum line and the dorado would then find our chum line. The only problem we had was with the pangas. They would see us hook-up and then drive through our chum line with a chum line of their own and circle our kayak with trolled pieces of squid. The pargo are directly behind the island on the northside of the island in about sixty feet of water. Didn't catch any yellowtail, but I was told that they are still picking up a few of Punta Lobos on El Carmen. Fish from three in the morning to about nine in the morning for best results. My main advice is avoid the heat! The bigger dorado are out in deeper waters according to the locals. Picked up a nice ten pound bonito on the north side of the island. I am convinced that there are some big dorado in the channel between El Carmen and Isla Coronadas and that you don't have to go way out to catch the big ones! My buddy preffered pulling in the calamari over fishing for dorado, the paddle isn't as far.
