Jeff,
I'd just work a stretch of your favorite kelp bed. If you don't have a favorite kelp area, you may want to try one of the many launches from Topanga up to County Line (even more north is good too). Maybe one of the harbor launches like MDR or Redondo. There are some good halibut areas around there as well.
