Humminbird's current battery case hols two 9 volt lantern batteries. They are bulky and the case is not water proof. Depending on how long you are fishing, one 7amp/12volt can last a long time on a fishfinder. Just don't turn on the back lighting and you are good for at least 4 days fishing if not more, I've never tested who long it will last, but it's easly tested by running the FF in demo mode on the battery.

: Question: We're heading out on a three week kayak fly fishign trek along the west coast of Vancouver Island and want to take a fish finder along. We're working with Humminbird on this and we're wondering if anyone has tried swapping out the gel cel battery that would apply with most standard models for AAs. Apparently you can buy a plastic case that you put the right number of AAs into to convert from the power requirement of the bigger battery. That way of course, you can more handily have back up power.
