I hear ya guys.
If you think of it as 6am-1pm, it's really 7 hours. The one hour window for sign in and weigh in can be misleading. Weigh in will be officially open at 12pm but you don't have to show up until 1pm. To get the most out of the time, try to get there before 6am. The parking lot will be open. Get your kayak rigged and ready to go so when 6am rolls around, you can sign right in and launch. The sign in will be similar to a party boat jackpot. We take the cash, put the angler's name next to a number on a ledger, circle the division they wish to enter and they're off.
I know of several anglers driving over an hour+ to get there. I don't want to get too many people in trouble with their better halves for keeping them out too long...hehe. This gives everyone who wants to hang out for the bbq time to grub and relax before heading home.
