To answer your questions. Sit on top is the vessell or choice for most Southern California Anglers. Lots of room for gear, good mobility on the deck, and self bailing.
Yes it can be dangerous. If your careless and confident you can take on anything the sea can dish out, well you may easily find your self in some troubled waters which can be a deadly situation.
On the other hand if your careful and play it safe you shouldn't have any problems. You must realize however anything can happen on the sea and the better prepared you are the more safe you will be.
