Actually I think in some areas, possibly Costa Rica(?), circle hooks are mandatory as they help with the preservation of the fish. And yes you just let them maw on it and as the fish starts to take it, slowly increase the pressure on it, never setting it, and next thing you know you have the beast on the line. In some places in Baja, the guides don't like them, and are not really familiar with their advanmtages, they are so used to swinging on the fish like a golf club. If you put one on a bed, for example, I noticed that often they even hook themselves into the sheets, they are so tricky, so it's not surprising that they embed themselves in the corner of the mouth so effectively. Although on occasion the fish swallows the hook and then it is hard to get the hook out of the stomach lining without damaging it. That happened to me with a rooster in Baja. If you are wondering why I put the hooks on the bed, that's where I was tying my leaders the night before.
