: I told my wife about this cool wireless fishfinder that I heard about; now I'm wondering if it's really worth buying. Any reviews out there?

I appreciate the size and the convenience that goes with it, but I'm not ready to compromise resolution and transmission strength for that. If you want mobility, I recommend a portable. Sure you have to deal with a battery and a little more bulk, but the sonar data will be much much richer. I don't see a boaters sonar needs and a kayak anglers sonar needs being much different from one another. I can't imagine a boater using one of these. I want a powerful transmitter and a display detailed enough to determine what type of structure is on the bottom; soft, hard, etc.

I haven't seen any positive reports about the Pirahna series but I have seen several negatives. I really like their Matrix series. I don't have a Matrix but have seen them on the water and have heard good things from their owners. I have a Humminbird 405sx and have been very happy with it.

The application for the Smartcast seems best suited for shore, pier and surf fishing. IMHO, portability is cool but there is too much compromise that goes along with it.
