My friend and I went to Picacho State Recreation Area last Thursday night for the weekend. I called a couple of days before we went to find out that the store out there is not there any more. That means if you are going out there you had better be self contained, because there is no place to get any supplys unless you go back to Yuma Or Winterhaven some 20 miles back down the road. We were arriving around 1:00 A.M.
and were stopped by the Border Patrol and asked what we were doing there at this time and where we were going etc. The agent let us go and we arrived at the State Park Camp-
ground a while later. The road was in good shape. My 2WD F150 made it with no problems.
We wanted to go to Outpoast Camp, but were told we could only go as far as Taylor Lake with 2WD. You can get further if you have 4WD, but there is no gaurentee because of very soft sand. The main campground is very nice. They have very clean outhouses and solar showers. The camp sights are nice.
The fishing was very slow. I talked to some guys in boats that didn't get squat. It didn't matter to us, because the weather was great, 90-95 degrees with a light breeze and the beer was cold. We fished from shore Friday and Saturday for just about nada. Sunday morning We took my kayak to Taylor Lake to cruise around and drop a line. It was great kayaking, but not so good fishing. We left on Sunday afternoon after a great weekend. The fishing was pretty dismal, but we didn't care, because it was so nice out there. I am going back in a few weeks for sure. I know the fishing will get better.
On the way back we got stuck on I 8 near Descanso, but that is another story.
Robert
