RE: I have been struggling with this argument for the whole year; being an old bait fisherman and using one rod it dawned on me that if you troll you want the most presentation, so use 2. But if you are going to jig, like I will for lings, then you might want just 1, so you can focus on the rocks and depth and not worry about snags.
The question of reeling in the line of the 2nd rod has come up before and it was answered that you reel in the line before fighting the fish; but the question can be that if you are near the kelp, reel in; open water, don't; near rocks, reel in; near boats, reel in.
