Ever since an old friend turned me onto these a few years ago, I've been hooked on Ritchie Navigation's dash mount style compasses.

You have to install them into the kayak: Find a vertical plane (last footwell usually works), cut a 2" hole (it says 2 1/16" but I cut exactly 2" to make the fit super snug), put the compass with gasket in, screw the nut in the back and presto, you have a dash style compass. When properly installed, there is no need for Marine Silicone, Goop, etc; The seal is solid and won't let a drop of water in.  Though  it certainly won't hurt it by being extra safe if you want to use a little Marine Goop.

Btw, each compass comes with a built in light that can be hooked up to a 12Volt (same one that runs the fish finder or bait tank).  I originally hooked it up to a toggle switch and then the battery.  Not a lot of us fish at night, but for those that crab, lobster and night fish, this is the way to go.

They have dealers all over North America but if you'd like, you can order them from Kayak Sportfishing.
