Trolling using a Downrigger

I'm still in the learning stages before I get started, so if this is a stupid question--that's why. Do any of you use a downrigger on your sit on tops?

I've seen a few mounted on the sit inside types of kayaks here on the Calif/Oregon border, but I'm leaning towards the Scupper Pro or Malibu Extreme. Do either of these glide well enough to troll paddeling for several miles?
