If you want to talk to somone regarding growth of the industry, you should write or call Go Bananas Kayaks in Hawaii (Gary the owner), at one time they were the largest Ocean Kayak SOT Dealer (I think) 6 years in a row. Since 1987 theyhave sold kayaks of various brands and styles. Besides Audrey Sutherland they started the 'Kayak Camping' craze in Hawaii. BTW Audrey Sutherland was one of the primary Founders of Hu'i Wa'a Kaukahi (kayak club).
I'm sure there are other Dealers who have been invovled with kayaking as long or longer but since Hawaii's economic growth is dependant on tourism, and since Ocean Kayak often uses Hawaii as a testing grounds for some of their kayaks, the evolution and economic development might interest you.
(Audrey Sutherland is the woman who first swam and the paddled a Seveylor inflatable around Moloka'i, and other Islands. She currently paddles the Alaskan coastline in another inflatable (sorry don't know the make), her goal is to do Chile and the rest of Europe. She is in her 80's)
