Hey, did you hear there was another shark attack?

All my non-kayaking friends come running with the news every time a swimmer or a surfer gets eaten. From the people I talk to the number one thing that keeps most of them out of the ocean is the fear of being eaten by a shark.

They make a good argument:
·Our kayaks are no match for a large shark
·We carry large amounts of bait and fish that attract seals which intern attract large sharks
·We have no defenses against a shark attack
My only argument back is that the statistics clearly show that almost no one is ever attacked by sharks.

If there is a silver lining to the shark attack scare it is that few people venture into the ocean by kayak. If people weren’t scared of the sharks our local near shore fishing spots would become overcrowded. We would be launching at 3am not to catch bait but instead to layout a circle of buoys and ropes to mark our favorite fishing spot for the day the way many people do now at the most popular beaches and parks on the weekends and holidays.

I tell my family and friends that if a shark kills me than they can take solace in knowing that I died while doing something that has over the years brought me great pleasure.

John
