Indie, go to my website and I have some details of this exact trip. I have went from Carlsbad to Pontos with great success on Bass.
You can buy bait at the Oceanside Bait Reciever for $5.00 if you are in a Yak. The legal term for it would be "shore bait". Otherwise, in a boat it would cost $30.00 I think.
