Being that we normally fish the Threshers in nearshore, shallw water(40'-200'or so) I wouldn't worry about attracting mako's too much... If you do hook one of those bad boys on your kayak, cut it off fast!I will show you the teeth marks one of those guys left on the swim step of my power boat a few years back. Mako's are very dangerous and I say that while fishing off a large boat, to tangle with a Mako on a kayak is lunacy!
Getting back to the Threshers, because we are fishing the conditions that support, and that the Threshers like, (Mako's are usually found in open, clean water)I don't worry about hooking anything other than Threshers(but I also carry a knife to cut the line just in case!).
