Ryan,

I am not sure if you understood my reply below but here is a second attempt.

If you are going to glue something to the inside of your hull, then why go on the cheap?

I can't imagine trying to justify saving a few bucks on a sonar.

Next, let's compare apples to apples. What does shoot through the hull really mean?

Shooting through Aluminum, fiberglass and wood hulls?

As long as the hull is solid, it should shoot through. I have seen discussion on the internet of Bass fishermen using Shoot through the hull transducers on Aluminum boats.

I have to speculate that the plastic hull of a kayak can be no where near as dense as an aluminum hull, fiberglass hull or plywood/fiberglass hull.

If you look at the pictures of my tranducer installation, you can see the transom mount bracket on the transducer. It works great, but I would not say that the cheap fish finders will work the same. This is an area if you want to be a tightwad, you deserve any trouble you have with the installation.

On eBay, if you are patient and watch, the 200 DX comes brand new in the box shipped in the under $140.00 range. I bought mine on the Buy-it-now feature and it shipped to my door for $131.00.

You can get into a lowrance or garmin, but I have no experience with those finders, so I can't help there. So far I like my 200DX, but I have not had it long enough to give a quality report. I think Jeff (Rhyno Bar) Krieger uses the 200 DX.

On my tandem I have been running a Humminbird Wide Portrait for the last three seasons. It works great.

The only problem I have heard of with the Humminbird finders is that the connections can corrode over time if you are not good at cleaning and treating them after each trip.

Jason here at kayak Sportfishing has been running the same Humminbird 405 for several years. I went to the 200DX, on my new kayak for the smaller display.
