: The answer is no! I bought one today and took Jas' advice (thanks). When placed flat, the compass does not have a visable reading...: : Can the Richie flush mount compass be mounted flat? I have a FND and long legs so my feet tend to be in the last foot well. There are no other vertical places to mount anything on the deck...Thanks. Good question. I've seen them mounted flat and they still work. In my Scupper TW, my feet rest in the last footwell. I mounted my compass up against the end of the footwell. I have to move my foot to see it though that's not a problem. Once mounted, it only sticks out about 1/8". I placed it where the arch of my foot would rest. That way I don't feel it when my foot rests up against the last footwell.Hope that makes sense.jas

If you're not getting an accurate reading when the compass lays flat, you may want to take it back to return or exchange it because you may not get an accurate reading when it's positioned vert. It wasn't meant to lay flat, but like I said in my previous post, I've seen it work on the few kayaks I've seen it mounted that way.
I've always followed the manufacturer's recommendations with mine and found a more vertical surface.
This is what I recommend. -See picture-

I hope it works out. Sorry for any inconvenience.
