I hit the headlands Saturday morning with a newbie. Normally I like to be paddling out of the harbor around 6 am when I go there, but the guy I brought along ran late getting to my house, so we didn't make it out to the point until 7 or so. None the less, it was a little snotty. There was a pretty good south wind and bait was tough to make. I fact, I caught only one decent bait fish and with in minutes of setting him adrift, I got nailed by a heart breaker WSB (27.5 inches). Still it was a fun little fight. The newbie had a blast throwing plastics. By his third cast, he landed his first yak fish (a short sandie). He landed several more as the day went on and is now hooked for life on kayak fishing. As for me, I ended up with the 1 WSB and about 3 nice sized sand bass. I probably spent too much time looking for the right kind of bait. The bass bite was pretty decent out there.

Day two, the newbie took me out on his boss's boat (out of long beach). The plan was to go to Catalina, but the boat wasn't performing in top shape and the conditions were pretty snotty. We ended up heading out to the flats for nada, then back inside to drift for halibut. We caught lots of sand bass and rock fish, but no halibut. This was my first trip in a boat since I started kayak fishing and the whole day, I kept thinking that I should have fished my kayak today. Nothing beats the serenity and freedom you get fishing on a kayak. That doesn’t mean I will turn down free boat trips. I’ll just have to make sure they will be going out of my kayak’s range.
