I launched at 5:30a with The Life Guard Guy. It’s always a pleasure paddling and talking with Brian because he has such a uniquely positive outlook on life.

We paddled north out of the reserve and hooked up with Tom Booth and Jimm Hoffmann. Together we all spent most of the morning trolling to the TP reef #1 and back in search of T sharks.

On my way back in I stopped off at the canyon for a little bottom scratching and was soon joined by one of the brightest new stars in the so cal kayak fishing world. John Roe aka Quite Man and myself managed a few rockfish before heading in. John may not be very quite but he obviously is a very accomplished kayak fisherman and I’m looking for him to be one of the top contenders in this years August 30th La Jolla/Steve Moyer kayak-fishing tournament.

The surf was way up when I was ready to land and a maverick wave came in out of nowhere, picking me up and threatening to pearl my long thin SPTW but as luck would have it the day had been very hot and the plastic of my SOT had become soft, so it just flexed in the middle instead of diving which allowing for a dry exit.

On a serious note back at the beach there were three helicopters in the air, a rescue boat in the water, emergency vehicles with flashing lights everywhere and they were all slowly circling an unmanned surfboard. The lifeguard tower had told everybody to leave the water and they were asking anyone who knew the whereabouts of a young man in black shorts to come to the tower immediately. Tom, Jimm & myself (all fathers) are as manly a men as you’ll ever come across but you could see the true concern in their excretions.

Please ware a life jacket, if not for yourself than for your father~john
