Now that I got your attention...

Launched from Corral with Jason and Justin (Soon to be kayak owner) around 0630HRS. By the way, Justin did a great job of launching and landing, it was his first time out on a kayak! It was overcast, and the seas were calm, sometimes glassy and sometimes a bit breezy, with only a slight swell. There was one kayaker already out on the water, with one launching down the beach. (By late morning there was a ton of kayakers and boaters!!!)

We had a hard time making the “right” kind of bait, plenty of Chovies for pizza, but no Big Macs. I kept trying for Big Macs but only found 2 small chovies (am I gonna get slammed on for that??) for my bait tank, I wanted that “Finding Nemo” look to keep me company on my yak (I think I’m going to put that slogan on my new yak!!, would that be a copyright infringement, is it patented or trademarked?, maybe just a decal of a clown fish).

Anyhow, Jason started trolling the rapala and Justin went closer to the kelp beds for halibut and bass. I paddled over to Justin to find bait over there, but only found smelt. I added a few of those to my Nemotank® (just kidding!), and put a nice 10” one on my rig to troll for Mr. T. On the way, I passed by Lou (I think?) and I hear a zzzzinnnnnnggggg, he hooks up!, 15-20 minutes later it ended up being a huge bat ray.

So I slow troll this smelt until it about drowns, and then start looking for bait again, I wanted a Big Mac!!! This time I add a little squid to the sabiki and now I have a sardine and two green macs (close!!) added to the Nemotank. THEN, baabammmm!!, 3 spanish Big Macs!! I felt like I hit the lottery!

I immediately start slow trolling one with my 20lb rig and 100lb leader that Jason gave me, with a 2oz sliding slinker. An hour goes by and nada, nada ting. Ok, now I’m frustrated, so I rig up my seeker 196 and go with straight 30lb with a 3/0 circle hook and another mac. 5 minutes into the paddle, zzzziinnnnggg, hook up! I let Jason know over the radio and he starts the hunt to find me to help me out. This thing takes advantage of my light rod and turns me for 360’s, dives, and short sleigh rides. 45 minutes later and after so many near misses of grabbing for the tail (me and Jason had a blast just laughing every time we had another near miss), Jason gets a hold of it!! My first time fishing for a Thresher and I catch one!!!...yeahhhh baby!! This one we guessed at about 50-60lbs, but felt like a hundred pounder on that rod. We get our photos and off we let him to go to find Nemo. I had already set in my mind days before that I was gonna keep one if it was over 100lbs.

Thanks for the help and company Jason and Justin!!

Greg

P.S.

To those who are thinking I should’ve kept it, I don’t care...and to those who are thinking I’m glad he released it, I don’t care...and to those who are thinking 100lbs is good, I don’t care...and to those who are thinking 100lbs is small, I don’t care. So long as it’s within the law of the land, it’s only about what I think, with MY catch.
