Gentleman's launch, just after 8a, @ N Leo parking lot. Bill from Ojai was there and while I was rigging the sled, he picked up a Calico in the 15" range. After that we headed towards Deep Hole looking for stones. First cast, first fish. A small Sandie (14"). While I was making bait, Bent Rod hailed from the beach. BR wasn't fishing. Apparently in a rush he had left his license and reels at home, but wanted to be out anyway. Off to DH. Arrived 'bout 9ish. Glassy water and a bit overcast. Started fishing the inside stones and worked our way out. BR took off about 10 and Bill took off about 12:30. Fished plastic and drug a 'dine most of the day. The 'dine saw sporadic action. A couple of raked baits and a good long rip that left me with just the head and shoulders (dog, I guess). The plastic however was consistent. Resulting in 13 bass. 9 Calicos 3 @ 13 (kept 2), 1 @ 15+", 3 @ 17", 1 18+" and a toad @ 20+. 4 sandies @ 12" to 14". Not a great # of fish but some good quality. The big Calicos weren’t shy. They ripped off several feet of line on the drop. They seemed to be lurking just above the numerous bait balls on the structure. The smaller fish were right on the bottom. Blown off the water at 1'ish and headed back to the P-lot. Landed dry between several surfers and a cadre of young sponge boarders. No WSB but a damn fine day anyway.
