I haven't used cat food to chum up bait for a while but I use to stick to fish flavors (tuna, ocean whitefish, salmon, etc;).

If the bait are around, a sabiki usually does the trick. If things are slow, I tip the sabiki hooks with tiny pieces of squid. I will sometimes cut up the tentacles and throw the pieces a little up current.
