Greg,

That day I didn't wear socks and it was cold. I stayed dry all day and it really helps on those cold lake days. You would not be able to stay warm safely with a wetsuit. The belt is a must. Mine also have a draw string at the top and with my PFD on, it would be hard for me to take on more than a liter of water if that. I would not be surprised is they increased bouancy with that belt on and all that trapped air. Walk around waist deep in them and all this makes more sense. I always wear my PFD , waders or not.

Last week at Arrowhead, I wore shorts and socks underneath and did fine. Late afternoons and early mornings are the times you need them, by 10:00 am my son and I had to take them off.

I'd wear them in Mission Bay, Newport or any lake. In the open ocean........if it's that cold, I'll stay home. In the open ocean, they'd hamper my swiming ability. I'd rather have a wetsuit so I could swim to shore if I ever got separated from my kayak.

I wore them on a grunion run. I'd wear them surfishing with a PDF during the winter or up in Pismo.

-Ted
