Not quite the saga of the Bay-to-Bay, but Tom Booth and I headed north from the LA Jolla Launch about 4:30am seeking possible fertile fishing areas north of the pier. Since Tom had caught a sizable YT last summer up there, as well as a PB'er catch two YT on a temp break last weekend, we decided to explore this area as a possible alternative to the crowded kelp.

Unfortunately, despite consistant 65 degree water temp, and periodic plentiful bait (mostly near the two Torrey Pines Reefs), this area was as shut down and fishless as the kelp was this weekend.

On the high side, it was quiet up there, and DOG-FREE. The reefs were full of life including seemingly plentiful bass, though the 120 ft. shelf didn't seem too fishy. Total paddling distance was probably about a mile more than a trip to the kelp, and the return trip "seems" longer than a return from the point.

It may be that this area will yield more in an afternoon bite, when bait balls are visible from the glider port.

On the other hand, is it just me, or does it seem like the bite so far this season in La Jolla is mostly turned on in the afternoon?

Jimm H.
