Pulled on to the beach around 5:15AM, had passed the parked vehicles of Johnny C., Outrigger Guy, and Vito. They were out there somewhere. My favorite kind of morning, clear, very light offshore breeze, small surf and warm enough to leave the wetsuit behind. Once outside bait was very easy, but all 6 " Spanish clones. I finally got a 10" Green mac and was ready. Lately I have been flylining a Spanish on 1 side and a Green Mac on the other. Slowly worked my way around the horn. Only a couple skiffs and 1/2 yaks and the 2, 1/2 day boats heading our way. Came up on Outrigger Guy (Chris) at 7AM, who had a 8-10#YT and said he had a few good runs that did not hold. 5 minutes later I got hit on the big Mac, so I really let it run. 10 minutes later, the fish comes up 25 feet from me. Seemed like it was done so I start pulling it toward me and set the gaff in my lap. About 4 feet from the boat it spooked and headed down. Pop, line broke, must have got the gillplate, just right. 5 minutes later and I am on again. This one was a smaller model, 23# male . At 8:30 work called and I had to hit the beach running. Another Chris, was loading up and had a 40# WSB that he got on a Fish trap. It was a short, but sweet day.
