hi robert, i transport my kayak upside down because its wider on top, more stability. it's pretty stable the way i've got it, and i cant really tell if there's more wind resistance or not. as far as i can tell, my mpg is the same with my yak on top.
note: i dont have a car rack. what i use are foam noodles and a lot of tie downs. it works great, but i don't drive faster than 65 on the freeway, and if you switch lanes because your're behind me, i'm not insulted. just my 2 cents
