: hey guys...Ive read a lot on bounce-balling for halibut and i was wondering if any of you could give me anymore tips or little tricks that you have learned. Pretty much all I fish for is halibut in and around san diego, like the north county area. I fish la jolla every now and then but tend to stick up around the carlsbad/encinitas/solana beach area. So if anyone has any tips on bait for the rigs or just some other hali tricks (favorite depths, structure, etc.)...but mainly bounce-balling for them, it would be great. thanks a lot...Sean DizzlePS: o and i forgot, do you guys slow troll your rig? thanks again.

Slow trolling can work. I don't know if it's because I'm lazy or what, but I always prefer drifting. If it's zero current, I'll super super slow troll and bounce. A good routine might be to paddle up current a ways, maybe at the far end of a nice sandy zone. Slowly thumb the rig down(try to be consistant when lowering the rig down...slow it down but try to not start and stop it) as steady as possible to prevent tangling. The 3-way swivel offers at least 3 options for tangling. Vary the leader lengths and start paying attention to what does and doesn't tangle...what makes the rod tip flutter (if you're using a dodger)? Drifting speed, size ball, leader lengths, dodger size, etc; All these variables should be adjusted and experimented with to see what works best. When you hook up with nice flatties, try to remember the conditions and tackle rig details (leader lengths, dodger size, bait, etc;).

I found that from a kayak, a 10 oz ball is sufficient. Easy to control and heavy enough to stir up some action. Nothing wrong with heavier balls, just sometimes grinds you down after several hours of what could be "slow" fishing (I use 1lb as well). The drift chute is helpful more often then not. If you're serious about your drifting, you'll get one.
Slow and steady retrieves....don't slam set like Bill Vance on a Big Mouth and try not to pump to hard. Easy on the drag and Presto.....You're next stop will be at the recipes section for Chef Ted's famous Halibut w/ Portabello mushrooms.
