: The Iceman picked up Johnny and me at 9 PM. At the beach the tide was still coming in, and the grunion weren’t expected to run for a few more hours. We cast lures for nothing but kelp.Johnny and myself walked up to the 7/11 for hot chocolate, candy bars, soda, beef sticks and other essential fishing foods. On the way back we talked about things important only to fathers and sons.Coincidentally arriving just minutes ahead of the grunion where a few of the areas finest fishermen: MOYER THE FISH DESTROYER aka Bendo-Matt, his fiancé, thelifeguardguy, Yak Atak, and friends. This was Johnny’s first grunion run. We sat quietly at the edge of the surf and then on the highest wave in the set they washed up. In a second my son was off and away, instinctively chasing the flopping little silver fishes. The first one was tough for him and nearly escaped several times. After bringing it to me he then related every detail of the capture.Johnny got better with every attempt and in the end he was scooping them up two at a time.We took our baits over to the mouth of the SD fiver and I would help a little as he cast out and very slowly worked the grunion back to the bank.At first I thought he had some kelp, but then I could see the rod tip moved by what was the unmistakable bob of a mighty headshake, followed by a couple good runs. I was sure it was a hugh flattie and I had to fight the urge to take the pole from him, so that we wouldn’t loose this fish to inexperienced hands. After fifteen long minutes of pumping and reeling, a sand shark was beached. Now very exhausted Johnny staggered up on the sand and lay down on my jacket where he fell asleep to the sound of the pounding surf. I put on fresh bait and waded out between Andy and AL for a little fishing of my own. Andy capped the evening with a 25” Halibut.John

That was touching. Great report. I can't wait to get my girls fishing. I may be a sap, but I got really choked up when you talked about Andy catching a 25" flatty.
