Using the direction from Drew’s web site http://www.orangejumpsuit.net/liars/maps/jst I drove to the Bayside Park in Chula Vista. The park attendant arrived early and I was on the water by 6:05. Made it to the National City free anchorage around 6:30 and promptly caught (2) spotties right out from under one of the first boats I came to. Caught them both on a squid tipped, chartreuse, twin tail, grub, but as it turned out I would not catch another bass for several hours.

I make it a point to paddle and fish this spot at least twice a year. Always amazed by the dozens if not hundreds of obviously unsailable sea junk that’s permanently home ported here. Most of the ships are floating (just barely) but some are not. I see that they have removed many of the larger sunken ships from the area since the last time I paddled through here, which is a shame because with them they have removed some of the romance. The fleet is made up of vintage sailboats like the COTTON Ball http://www.momentoffame.com/snapshots/MomentOfFame/l32690.jpg she was originally outfitted with a tall wooden mast, brass fitting and certainly (back in her glory days) must have sailed in all of the seven seas. There are old workboats and retired haze gray x-military vessels. They all look abandoned and falling apart, but as the sunrises I can see they aren’t. The inhabitance whom are made up of mostly aging, single, white men with pirate like bushy long hair and beards one by one appear on deck. I did talk to one single woman and one clean-cut yuppie looking guy and many of the people had dogs. As I slowly drifted among them they greet me as you would an old friend and we talk for as long as it took me to make a few casts under their keels. I couldn’t help but ask them questions like how long have you lived here, how did you get here in the first place, what’s it like living here etc.etc.etc?

My favorite boat is http://www.momentoffame.com/snapshots/MomentOfFame/l32691.jpg. If you look real close you can see a wench and a car on top of it. It’s one of those cars that you can drive in and out of water. Would appear that at one time the Captain used to drive the car from the boat to the boat launch and then drive it to work and back to the boat again at night where he would then wench it back up onto the helicopter deck for the night. If it had been me I would most certainly have trolled both ways and if the fish were biting than I would have never made it to work at all that day ;-)

I didn’t fish with the Liars Club today but on my way back in I did stop and talk with a few of the local favorites: buddha, Bassact, pEsCaDoR and others who’s names I didn’t get. They all had different approaches and were using different types of lures, and were paddling in different brands of kayaks, but one thing that they did have in common was that they were willing to let me tag along and they all took the time to explain their different potential winning strategies for fishing this unique San Diego Bay fishing spot.
