Had plans to launch at 7:30 A.M. but it was looking kind of nasty in North County so I decided to give my daughter a ride to school then head straight to Tidelands. Launched at 9:15 A.M. Started trolling twords the Coronado Marriot pier with a black and gold 5 1/2" jointed Rebel Spoonbill. Didn't get anything on the way to the pier so I turned around and headed back twords the sailboats. About 50 yards North of the sail boats the trolling rod gets bent. I hauled in a 12" spotty. The fishfinder was picking up tons of bait and larger fish everywhere in that area. Trolled a little farther and the trolling rod goes off again. This time it's a short cuda. First one I've caught this year. I trolled a little more in that area for nada. I decided to head over to the bridge trolling on the way. I just got a Abu Garcia 4600 C3 and a 7' ML trigger stick for my birthday and wanted to try it out on the bass. I have had the best fishing luck around the first 3 pillars of the bridge for bass and halibut. I paddeled past the bridge and deadsticked a frozen 'chovie on the bottom and drifted back underneath the bridge casting a 3" pink grub with a 1/4 oz leadhead tipped with squid on my new outfit with 6 lb test. My second cast I caught a 12" spotty. I made several more drifts for nada. There was alot of loose eel grass in the water that was fouling my lures. I decided to switch to a shallow running jointed Rebel. I headed over to the flat in front of the Seal base. The Seals were busy today. Alot of boat traffic of all types comming in and out of thier base made for alot of chop on the water. I got to the flat and there were a couple of boats with seals in them. They were spinning doughnuts and hauling ass all over the place. I fished for a few minutes and left the area when I was getting some dirty looks from those guys. The looked like they were busy training and they didn't need me in thier way. I decided to troll back to the first pillars of the bridge. I tied on a silver and blue Spoonbill and paddeled. I got a 12" spotty on the South side of pillar 8. I got back to pillar 5 and started drifting under the bridge deadsticking a 'chovie on the bottom and casting the pink grub. I picked up another spotty on the grub. I decided to tie on a spinner bait that Wal Mart was blowing out for a buck a piece. I used a piece of squid for a trailer. I started another drift under the bridge casting the spinner bait out and letting it hit the bottom and reeling it back in slowly. Somthing absolutely slammed the spinner bait and fought like crazy. It turned out to be a 12" spotty. The first one that I ever got on a spinnerbait. He just about swallowed that whole 3/8 oz spinner bait! He hit like a freight train! I did a few more drifts for nada. I decided to troll and cast in that area North of the sailboats. There was mucho bait and fish in the water between the North end of the sailboats to the pier at the Coronado Marriot. There were pellicans and a few other birds diving on bait. What ever it was it didn't want to play. Two guys were fishing in a skiff in that area. They didn't get bit much either. I decided to call it a day. Off the water by 1:30 P.M. 5 spottys, all about 12", and 1 short cuda all released. A very nice day on the water. I'm going again next week.
