Got to the parking lot at Baby Beach at 6:45 A.M. Hammerhead and his friend were there unloading thier yaks. I started to unload mine and realized I had forgotten my Scotty rod holder. I was bummed because I use it for trolling. I wet over to Dana Warf Sportfishing to see if they had anythng and they didn't. West marine didn't open untill 9:00 A.M. So I decided to rough it. I got back to Baby Beach and talked to Hammerhead. He was kind enough to pull one of the West Marine rod holders off of his Fish & Dive and let me borrow it. That was very nice of him. I would like to say "Thank you Hammerhead. I appreciate it very much." Got all my gear in the yak and rolled down to Baby Beach. I was supposed to meet Ted today. Hammerhead said he called him and said he had car trouble and wouldn't be there. Deafjack showed up. I had read his posts and had never met him before. About this time Fishhog met us. I hadn't met Fishhog before either. We launched at 7:45 A.M. We decided to head for the Doheny Beach area to try for halibut. There was a mild Santa Anna blowing that seemed to pick up a little. It kind of made us a little apprehensive but we headed twords Doheny anyway. I trolled along the way with a deep diving plug and it got fouled with weeds. I stopped and changed to a medium depth lure. We stopped along the way to fish at the bridge for nothing. We got to Doheny and Hammerhead and his friend were already there. They were using live bait. The wind was blowing and moving me out. Fishhog said we needed to be in close to the beach so I paddeled back in and put out my drift chute. It helped alot. I dead sticked a frozen 'chovie to the bottom. We were in about 10 ft of water. I tossed many different kinds of plastics for nada. I got a strike on the 'chovie and the drag started to sing. I got the rod out of the holder and whatever was on had spit the hook. That was the closest I came all morning to catching anything. All of the sudden the wind stopped and the water was like glass. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. Hammerhead was getting lots of bites. I saw him get a couple of short white seabass. Fishhog caught a couple as well. Deafjack caught one and some sand bass. The weather was absolutely beautiful. The fishing was a little slow. After a few hours we decided to head back in. I got a big skunk job. It sure was a beautiful day on the water though. Back in at about noon. Hammerhead, thanks again for loaning me the rod holder. Fishhog it was nice meeting you. We should try Tidelands some time soon. Jack it was nice meeting you. I'm glad you could make it down here and fish with us.
