I think it's a lot more scary to tangle w/ the Bull sharks. A LOT!!!
The only known Thresher attack that I've seen documented was in a case in Great Britain. It was more like a strong bump, mild accident ramming, than it was an attack. The real danger is from fishing line wrapping you up while you're fighting or handling them (i.e. choking or drowning). The next biggest danger is the tail; it can whack the silly right out of ya. The other dangers might be where it tows you; depending on how rough the weather is, that could be dangerous too.
I'd love to do some Florida fishing, but I won't be looking for sharks, though I'm sure there's no avoiding them there. I just saw a show where they were targeting "Spinners" just off the beach. That looks fun.........
The Thresher season isn't that long here. Maybe 2 months or so of good fishing time. We spend the other days plugging away for a multitude of different Bass species, reef fish; rockfish, white fish, red snappers, Sheephead, Halibut, White Sea Bass (Giant croakers), Yellow Tail, various small croakers, perch, and others.........
The Thresher is, for the most part, our largest fish that some of us target when they're around. It's a very tough, intense battle. Not sought by all.
We don't want to give you the impression that everyone on a kayak goes after these guys. Most don't. It's a very extreme form of kayak fishing. I love fishing for them, and so do others, but I'm having almost as good of a time just touring around looking for bass in the kelp or rock fish in the deeper reefs.
