: sounds like a pretty fun day! i had to work today or I might have been out in the area. Next time your fishing there, try the area next to the bridge for some Spotties. I have also seen guys catching chovies (i think, maybe they were smelt?)with a bait net at the boat launch peir just to the north of the park. I think live bait would be a big help around there!!
good to hear from another south bay yaker.

Launched from Tidelands Park at the end of the Coronado Bridge at 7:00 A.M. Rigged up and paddeled to the area in front of the Navy Seal base. On my 10# rig I had a frozen anchovie with a sliding sinker. On my 6# rig I had a 4" rootbeer power grub tipped with bloodworm on a 1/4 oz lead head. I decided to try the bloodworm to see if it made any difference over the squid pieces. I started a drift and my 10# rig goes major bendo. I know it wasn't a spotted bay bass. I thought it might be a halibut. I fought it for a bit and up comes a sculpin. It fought alot bigger than it was. I released it and put another 'chovie on and drifted some more. I was getting a little close to the Seal base and got a visit from the Coast Guard. They were real nice, and told me to stay at least 100 yards away from anything that belongs to the Navy. I said"no problem" and reeled in and paddeled farther out off the base. I used my Drift Chute for the first time. It worked great. I like it so much that I won't go out without it. It really slows down your drift alot. I drifted the flats in front of the Seal base for about an hour more for nothing. I made a move to the mouth of Glorieta Bay. I metered a few fish off the bottem. I dropped down with the 'chovie to the bottem. I put the rod in my new Scotty rod holder. I was re rigging my 6# outfit when the rod with the 'chovie goes bendo. I set my other rod down and by the time I got to the other one whatever was there was gone, and so was the 'chovie. I put another one on and put it back in the holder. I went back to my other rod to change lures and the one with the 'chovie goes bendo again. I set the hook but it got off. I never got any more bites on the 'chovie. I put a smoke colored Power grub on and tipped it with bloodworm. I drifted for a while and got a bite I set the hook and had somthing on then it felt like I lost it, but it was swimming twords me. Then it spit the hook. What ever it was chewed the hell out of my grub. It was about 10:30 so I headed back in. All in all a pretty fun day on the water. I think I'll stick with the squid pieces over the bloodworms it's not worth the extra money. I still have to get used to the new rod holder. Robert
