The clips I use are scew in. Like tap scews. I really like them. Call CKF and ask if they have those in stock(I'm sure they do). They guarantee them. I broke one and they replaced it "no questions asked".
Placement is somewhat important so that you don't hit them while paddling. One is mounted on the rail sorta adjacent to my seat. The other is mounted just a few feet up. I think if I remember correctly, I mounted them a little more towards the back (one behind the seat, and one just a few feet up). It got in the way of my paddle strokes so I had to remount them.
I like these better than the rubber ones. Though the great thing about the rubber ones is that you don't have to worry about scuffing up the roof of your car. The rubber ones are much cheaper too. I have a 2000 Honda Accord, and have learned to extremely careful when loading up the yak to the top.
