: Find a cheap/used lumber rack that the construction guys use. You can find them setting yards for sale cheap. I answered a post on one of the boards where someone was giving his rack away for free.

I like the lumber racks. You can easily bring a partners kayak (or more) with the rack. I saw a really cool one recently built out of all large diameter PVC. It was almost like a cage. It was easy for him to remove the PVC rack out of the bed when he wanted to.
