I usually shoot for at least 12"-24". You may want to mix up the lengths and see how it performs for your rig. I've talked to a few great Halibut anglers, Pascall to mention one, that recommend using a pretty long line from your weight to the 3 way. I can't remember what Pascall the Halibut slayer used in regards to length, but it was at least a few feet long. I tend to max mine out at just over 2 1/2 ft, though usually use something more like 20-24".

Change it up. I don't know all of the factors affecting the rigs when I'm drifting so I adjust things here and there from time to time. Whatever rig caught the last fish...that's your best rig.
