: jas, u seem to cover a lot of fishing ground. do u gps ur spots or use witchcraft?

I don't have a GPS. Though I do have a good sonar (Humminbird 405SX) which really helps find the structure I'm looking for (whether it be a reef, rocks or a sandy bottom).

I use to spend a lot of time fishing and not "looking for fish". I'd drop the line in the water as soon as I launched.

What I do now is spend the extra time paddling and carefully watching the sonar for activity and structure. (pretty basic strategy)
Like many anglers, I like to draw upon physical landmarks out of the water (life guard stations, rock piles, houses) to mark a "hot" area or good structure zone.

The more time I invest into paddling/covering an area, the easier it is to fish it the next time.
Fishing with John Ceviche, you really get to see that strategy in work. He really studies what he sees under the water.

Sonar didn't do much for me until I learned how to interpret what I was looking at. The manual shows these nice images of clear resolution, with simple ways to make out hard and soft structure. I still haven't seen my sonar reflect images with data as clear as the manual. Though with practice, I've been able to figure out the sonar readings.

Tight lines,

jas
