Jim,
I got a Tyrnos 30 and love it. Pretty sure you will feel the same after you use it. Great drag and a loud clicker. I got the single speed bue at 5.0:1 its rather fast for a 30 size reel. _________________ I am Jacks smirking revenge.

why that reel over an avet? or the saltist levers? just curious.
You know I have pretty much tried them all and all the lever drag reels have their pros and cons.
For 50 reels size I own both Tiagras and Internationals, for 30 size reels to 20s I own Shimano TLDs, Internationals, and Daiwa SLDs.
15s, 10s, and fives I've been using TLDs though I do own a JX and SX Avet.
For durability smoothness of drags and just trouble free maintenance I have to go with Shimano TLDs. They are extremely reliable, and just tough reels. An I love them for flyline and dropper loop fishing. They cast like crap though, and since they quit making them the price has gone up.
I'll be honest I do not really like the Avet reels. I had a EXW that I sold, and with the SX and JX I will probably sell them as as well.
For me the Avet reels feel clunky, and though I like their builds mechanically, to me they feel like winches, and I do not like them as much because I do not like the bump ups in their drag cams.
I want smooth reel with good freespool with an infinite adjustment where it goes from freespool to full drag at a steady swing. I'd probly be a big fan of Avet if the had more traditional drag cams. I also have had corrosion issues with them, that I never have with the TLDs. For kayaking the Shimano TLDs give me what I want, low maintenance, solid construction and a smooth infinite adjustment drag. The only drawback for me is the fives and tens are not strong enough for forty pound fishing at La Jolla, their price is through the roof, and they have more capacity then I need for fishing spectra from a kayak.
I was considering the saltists but their lever drags were more then I wanted to spend. I got the single speed tyrnos 8 new for $149, and a two speed new for $189, where a single speed saltist would be over $200.
Like I said I'm very impressed with the smaller Tyrnos reels. I actually bought a larger Tyrnos when the first came out and did not like the gearing. The 6 to one is perfect though on the smaller reel, and they put out more drag then I could ever utilize. We'll see how well they hold up but right now I'm pretty sold. I'm thinking 40 top shots on the 2 speed for dropper loop fishing, and thirty topshots on the single speed for flyline.
We'll see how that works out..
Jim

Did you look at shimanos new talica? castable lever drags.
The Talica is definitely a step up, but too expensive for me. It will be interesting to see how well the Tyrnos 8 casts, it looks like it could cast well, and I can mag it to cast even better if it looks like it's worth the effort.
So what's the verdict Jim? Did ya get a chance to fish it yet? I've been eyeing this reel for a while now...
It's fantastic. Very strong reel with a super smooth drag, and it actually casts well unlike the TLD5.
I threw iron with it last rip and never backlashed but I was thumbing it. I'm now going to mag one of them and see what kind of distance I can get out of it.
Definitely worth the money. I'm seriously considering getting another 2-speed, as it was the smoother and more powerful of the two.
